Sodor, which lies between the mainland and the Isle of Man, was discovered by the Rev. Wilbert Awdrey and his brother George, a librarian by trade, during a visit to the Isle of Man in 1950. It became the setting for, at the time of this writing (1987), some 34 books of the Railway Series, starring Thomas the Tank Engine and friends — the final six of which had been written (as of 1987) by the Rev. No Jacket. In a world which will presumably never run short of earnest adolescents eager to form rhymes on the subjects of babbling brooks and young love, how can we ever hope to definitively identify the “Worst Poet in the English Language”? For starters, our candidate must surely be an adult who undertakes to write on serious matters, and who takes himself seriously, as well — intentional parody must be promptly disqualified. But beyond that, a certain ineffable gift for locating just the right word, for crafting a turn of phrase of unique beauty or power, must also be totally lacking, to a degree impossible to attribute to mere chance. Many have aspired to such greatness, yet who but William McGonagall — the hand-loom weaver who in the late 19th Century used to sell his poems as penny broadsheets in the streets of Dundee — could have crafted the immortal lines “Beautiful railway bridge of the silv’ry Tay! \/ Alas!
