In the past, former President Bill Clinton has been frank enough to admit that his party and administration lost momentum and public support — eventually, control of Congress — by promoting radical left-wing agendas far beyond what most Americans will easily tolerate.<\/p>\n

The former president specifically attributed the loss of Congress in 1994 to the ill-considered efforts of the far-left wing of his party to further restrict lawful gun ownership. But before that, there was another issue the revealed to the public just how far out in \u201cleft\u201d field some of those surrounding President Clinton really were. And that issue was socialized medicine.<\/p>\n

American collectivists have learned not to call it that, any more. Instead, they use euphemisms like \u201csingle payer\u201d — as though they seek to hold some giant lottery in which a Yazoo City garage mechanic from named Billy Bob Bufus would be selected to reach into his coveralls and pay everybody else\u2019s medical bills for a year.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not the \u201csingle payer\u201d they really have in mind, of course. They want every doctor to work for the government — the system the causes even devoutly socialist legislators to flee France for medical care in the United States when their own lives are at risk, the system that reduced male life expectancies in Russia below 50.<\/p>\n

Early on in his administration, looking for something for the first lady to do, Mr. Clinton appointed Miss Hillary to head up a giant secret task force to draw up a proposed new nationalized \u201cHealth Security Act.\u201d Mrs. Clinton put together a 1,300-page doozy. Under her plan, anyone attempting to \u201cget out of line\u201d and pay cash for faster medical attention would have gone to jail.<\/p>\n

That sounds far-fetched, but it\u2019s actually typical of any \u201cone-payer\u201d government medical monopoly. If things in limited supply are not rationed by price, they have to be rationed by bureaucrats.<\/p>\n

Stuart Browning is a young filmmaker who has put together a series of short films warning Americans about the dangers of collectivized medicine and the benefits of free markets in health care. One of these films, \u201cA Short Course in Brain Surgery\u201d can be viewed for free in only a few minutes on your home computer<\/a>. It\u2019s worth the time.<\/p>\n

The five-minute short introduces us to a retired Ontario body shop manager named Lindsay McCleith. Mr. McCleith had terrible headaches, and suffered a seizure. Both he and his doctor suspected a brain tumor, and asked the Canadian National Health system to schedule the diagnostic test known as an MRI. Mr. McCleith got his appointment — four months away.<\/p>\n

He and his wife offered to pay cash to get faster attention. But that\u2019s not allowed in Ontario. (Sound familiar?)<\/p>\n

He crossed the border to Buffalo, N.Y. and got his test on four days. Turned out he had a brain tumor the size of a golf ball. Armed with this evidence of the seriousness of his condition, he returned to Canada, seeking quick surgery and reimbursement for his expenses. The Canadian \u201csingle-payer\u201d system which American leftists yearn to emulate would do neither.<\/p>\n

His doctor estimates Mr. McCleith would have waited eight months for treatment in his home country. Here, the whole process — diagnosis, consultation, surgery — took one month.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, he and his wife had the $28,000 that cost. Though Sandra McCleith says she would gladly have mortgaged her home to pay the bills. \u201cWhen your life is in danger, you\u2019re desperate,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

That only works if you can get to America, though. No amount of money would have bought them timely treatment in Canada. Even \u201casking for permission\u201d to go to the United States takes eight months.<\/p>\n

And now the \u201cprogressives\u201d want to let Americans die while they wait in line, too.<\/p>\n

Today, Mrs. Clinton says she\u2019s \u201clearned her lesson\u201d about proposing socialized medicine. But one examines her written and spoken record in vain for any declaration that collectivism is inherently wrong in medicine or anywhere else — that we need to shut down the current, cost-shifting, redistributionist Medicare and Medicaid boondoggles and restore American medicine to a free-market footing.<\/p>\n

Instead, we\u2019re left to conclude the \u201clesson\u201d Mrs. Clinton has learned is that it\u2019s wiser to impose socialized medicine incrementally, one small step at a time, rather than be honest and spell out your intentions, handing fans of freedom as fat and juicy a target as her gigantic \u201cHealth Security Act.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nor is there any indication to date that her remaining Democratic opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, has foresworn this vital plank in the socialists\u2019 century-old platform, either.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
