Walter Williams, esteemed economics professor at George Mason University, last week summarized Climategate, to date: <\/p>\n
\u201cNew evidence proves that climatologists and environmental policy advocates have not only fed us lies (and) engaged in scientific and academic fraud, but committed criminal acts as well. Last month, Russian computer hackers obtained thousands of e-mails from the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in England. CRU has the world\u2019s largest temperature data set. In collaboration with scientists around the world … its research and mathematical models form the basis of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\u2019s (IPCC) 2007 global warming report.\u201d <\/p>\n
The Climategate e-mails reveal man-made global warming fraudsters \u201caround the world who brazenly discuss both the destruction and hiding of data that does not support their global-warming claims,\u201d professor Williams notes. \u201cThey discuss criminally deleting data rather than comply with Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. There\u2019s also discussion of faking data for journals such as Nature, conspiring to keep opposing science out of peer-reviewed journals (of which they controlled the editorial boards), and using statistical \u2018tricks\u2019 to hide the cooling period of the last 10 years. … <\/p>\n
\u201cEditors of professional journals, who were willing to publish articles that disagreed with the warmers, were forced to resign — as was in the cases of editors at Climate Research and Geophysical Research Letters,\u201d professor Williams reports. <\/p>\n
But it fell to Wall Street Journal columnist Daniel Henninger to note, on Dec. 4 in a column headlined \u201cClimategate: Science Is Dying,\u201d just how massive the aftershocks could be: <\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think most scientists appreciate what has hit them,\u201d Mr. Henninger wrote. \u201cThis isn\u2019t only about the credibility of global warming. For years, global warming and its advocates have been the public face of hard science. … The public was told repeatedly that something called \u2018the scientific community\u2019 had affirmed the science. … Because \u2018science\u2019 said so, all the world was about to undertake a vast reordering of human behavior at almost unimaginable financial cost. … <\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is happening at East Anglia is an epochal event,\u201d columnist Henninger was one of the first to grasp. \u201cThis has harsh implications for the credibility of science generally. … <\/p>\n
\u201cThe East Anglians\u2019 mistreatment of scientists who challenged global warming\u2019s claims — plotting to shut them up and shut down their ability to publish — evokes the attempt to silence Galileo. … In our time, most scientists outside this circle have kept silent as their climatologist fellows, helped by the cardinals of the press, mocked and ostracized scientists who questioned this grand theory of global doom.\u201d <\/p>\n
Starting to get it? To land continued government grants, it was necessary to \u201cdevelop\u201d evidence that would \u201cprove\u201d the claim that \u201cman-made global warming will fry us all on a griddle unless we cede massive new power, massive wealth, our standard of living and our industrial dominance of the world to the \u2018scientific\u2019 central state.\u201d <\/p>\n
What those who dutifully excreted such steaming piles of crap have come close to accomplishing is to require that the world now presume, in self-defense, that any state-funded \u201cscience\u201d is little more than government-funded propaganda to justify taxing us, regulating us, licensing us, fining us, advancing National Socialism under a new, Green flag. <\/p>\n
Mind you, it couldn\u2019t happen to a more deserving gang of grant-chasing welfare leeches and receivers of stolen property. <\/p>\n
It\u2019s not as though this is their first blatant fraud and attempt to quash reasonable dissent. If \u201cHIV causes AIDS,\u201d why is Magic Johnson still healthy, and why did a molecular biologist as esteemed as Dr. Peter Duesberg have to put his career at risk to point out the \u201cHIV-causes-AIDS\u201d hypothesis fails to meet not just one but ALL FOUR of Koch\u2019s postulates, otherwise universally used to determine disease causality? <\/p>\n
If \u201csecond-hand smoke causes cancer,\u201d why is it when the first U.S. studies failed to turn up the sufficiently strong, two-to-one correlation between disease and cohabiting with a smoker which had always been, up till then, the required standard for showing medical causality, the parties simply reduced the amount of correlation required — and subsequently ignored larger, international studies that show no provable harm from second-hand smoke, at all? <\/p>\n
