Nation\u2019s \u201cForests Are Severely Damaged By Marijuana Grow Sites,\u201d reads the headline on the Dec. 7 press release from the U.S. Forest Service, datelined Washington, D&C.<\/p>\n
Marijuana cultivation sites in 20 states on 67 national forests \u201chave caused severe damage,\u201d said Forest Service director of law enforcement David Ferrell. In California alone, the Forest Service has cleaned up and restored 335 sites, removing 130 tons of trash, 300 pounds of pesticides, five tons of fertilizer and nearly 260 miles of irrigation piping, the agriculture cop testified.<\/p>\n
\u201cNatural vegetation and wildlife are killed as growers use liberal doses of herbicides, rodenticides and pesticides, some of them banned in the U.S.,\u201d Mr. Ferrell told whatever staff members were filtering in and out of the room. \u201cThese chemicals can cause extensive … damage to ecosystems. Human waste and trash in the grow sites are widespread. Winter rains create severe soil erosion and wash the poisons, this waste and trash into streams and rivers — including Congressionally-designated Wild and Scenic Rivers.\u201d<\/p>\n
No! Not the Wild and Scenic Rivers!<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is incumbent on the agency to do what is necessary to ensure that the resources we manage are protected and visitors as well as employees are safe,\u201d Mr. Ferrell told the Fearless Drug Warriors.<\/p>\n
And I\u2019m glad to hear it.<\/p>\n
I then proceeded to read the rest of the press release, seeking word on how precisely the USFS now plans to join the battle to nip this problem in the bud by seeking re-legalization of marijuana cultivation on private lands — land the owners would have an obvious incentive to keep in better shape so they can plant again the following year — since it\u2019s clear to everyone the only reason people run the risk of having their crops regularly seized and destroyed on Forest Service land is because this popular medicinal plant has been absurdly banned from private cultivation for 80 years.<\/p>\n
Banned why? Because of racist propaganda back in the early 20th century that \u201cthe devil\u2019s weed\u201d was widely used by black and Hispanic males to seduce white women, and because Harry Anslinger\u2019s Prohibition boys needed a new mission after that Great Saint of progressivism, Franklin Roosevelt, re-legalized alcohol (the far more dangerous drug favored by white folks) back in 1933. Instead, it appears the Forest Service — which never bothered to point out to the Senate confab that marijuana isn\u2019t actually a \u201cnarcotic\u201d — \u201cwill continue to enhance partnerships with other federal, state, local and Tribal agencies in a cooperative effort to investigate and eradicate marijuana cultivation and other narcotic activities occurring on Forest System lands,\u201d Ferrell said.<\/p>\n So, at a time when the federal government seeks bankruptcy in a lemming-like cliff-dive, the agency simply wants more money to do what has been failing so spectacularly for years.<\/p>\n Did I say merely \u201cfailing\u201d? Pot farming on \u201cpublic lands\u201d is one of America\u2019s few remaining billion-dollar growth industries!<\/p>\n Nor could I find any mention that a single member of the \u201cSenate Caucus on International Narcotics Control\u201d inquired why the hell the Forest Service keeps destroying every one of these million-dollar crops it stumbles on, rather than earning some return for the Treasury by selling the herb at market rates to legitimate medical patients holding legitimate doctors\u2019s recommendations in states which have legalized those uses, but where such patients now suffer without that medicine as both state and federal \u201claw enforcement\u201d agencies flout those laws, busting even those who seek to distribute high-quality cannabis products free of charge (as I see our local sheriff\u2019s deputies busted another marijuana dispensary last week, right here in River City.)<\/p>\n In fact, I asked Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie a few weeks ago why his department doesn\u2019t distribute medical marijuana seized up on Mount Charleston to sick people in possession of such doctors\u2019 slips.<\/p>\n Apparently misunderstanding the question — our editorial board meeting was breaking up — he laughed, \u201cYeah, that would look great Vin, if the department started selling guns.\u201d<\/p>\n Guns, medicine, whatever. So what If the ninth and tenth amendments guarantee us freedom from federal intervention with our medical liberties? Ban it, seize it, burn it. How much it costs to wage this war on the God-given human rights of the American people makes no difference. We\u2019ve got federal payrolls that need growing. Fund more failure!<\/p>\n # # #<\/p>\n You know that big copper-roofed facility you can see from the Spaghetti Bowl as you drive through downtown Las Vegas? It\u2019s the old Downtown Transportation Center, a huge, tile-floored facility built with millions in city and federal tax money back in 1987, which, I\u2019m now informed, \u201chas been a dark spot in downtown Las Vegas since the Regional Transportation Commission opened a new transit center at Casino Center Boulevard and Bonneville Avenue,\u201d near the Unnecessary New City Hall.<\/p>\n Wow, talk about bad planning and a huge waste of taxpayer dollars. I\u2019ll bet some heads rolled over that fiasco! Let\u2019s just Google \u201cLas Vegas big scandal over abandoning high-priced downtown bus terminal. …\u201d<\/p>\n And … not a word. I guess it\u2019s pretty far down the list of fiscal missteps in a city that lost millions using eminent domain to drive out thriving small downtown businesses to create NeoFlopolis and its adjacent White Elephant Parking garage, not to mention spending more recent millions to renovate a defunct casino into the Unnecessary New City Hall, so the perfectly good \u201cold\u201d city hall could be turned over to some shoe company. (There\u2019s a money-maker!)<\/p>\n Anyway, I now read in the paper that some folks hope to set up a farmer\u2019s market in the not-so-old abandoned bus station. Our reporter was there, a week back, as Kerry Clasby, one of the organizers, reached into \u201ca basket of specialty produce that included cauliflower, artichokes, and heirloom tomatoes\u201d and \u201cpeeled open an organically raised tangerine to share with a small group.\u201d<\/p>\n Wow! Lucky thing Clark County Health District inspector Mary Oaks wasn\u2019t on scene to order that \u201cunlabeled\u201d produce doused with bleach, informing the purveyors they\u2019re not even allowed to feed such stuff to the pigs, as she did at Quail Run Farm out in Overton a few months back.
