Did everybody have fun at those Saturday morning Nevada Republican caucuses?<\/p>\n
Actually, there weren\u2019t many \u201ceverybodies\u201d present at mine. I almost didn\u2019t go myself, figuring the \u201cStick with the unprincipled RINO Bob Dole-George Bush-John McCain-Mitt Romney\u201d lemmings already had their done deal.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m really a Libertarian. I\u2019ve only retained my GOP registration (there was once a state senate primary I cared about) because Ron Paul — who\u2019s a lot more of a libertarian than Fearless Drug Warrior Bob Barr, the LP\u2019s unlikely nominee last time around — has managed to voice a few libertarian points in the 90 seconds the leftist debate moderators have reluctantly given him in between laying clever traps for each of a series of doomed, you-don\u2019t-even-control-your-own-body Conservative Crusaders of the Hour.<\/p>\n
The 16 members of my precinct who actually bothered to show up were expected to squeeze our adult butts into those molded-together chair and desk thingees in which sixth graders now sit in little squares — wouldn\u2019t want them to actually sit facing the teacher\u2019s desk, that would be SO 1940s. And then we waited.<\/p>\n
No one had brought us an instruction sheet or even the presidential ballots. Some party volunteer with a name tag showed up and told us that stuff would be forthcoming. His only other bit of information was that \u201cYour votes here are binding.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHow will they be binding?\u201d I asked. \u201cWhat\u2019s the punishment for a delegate who goes to the convention and votes differently from how we want ?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAll I can tell you is your votes are binding,\u201d the gentleman said.<\/p>\n
\u2018They\u2019re not binding,\u201d I replied. \u201cWhen we did this four years ago, our delegates went to the state convention and tried to put together national convention delegate slates different from those they were handed, so Sue Lowden and company told them they were out of time, they hadn\u2019t paid for the room past 6 o\u2018clock, everyone go home, we\u2019ll reconvene later. But they never reconvened, and we have no idea who chose our delegates to the national convention. Sue Lowden and Beelzebub, for all I know.\u201d<\/p>\n
(For the record, Sue Lowden was once a courageous state senator.)<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, if you think they\u2019re going to cheat us and not pay attention to our votes, maybe you shouldn\u2019t be here,\u201d the gentleman said.<\/p>\n
Smartest thing I heard all day. I believe I\u2019ve gone through my last such farce. No delegate can be punished for changing his or her vote, which means no primary votes are binding, which is why it\u2019s called a \u201cpreference\u201d vote. You can express a \u201cpreference\u201d for Camembert, but you\u2019re going to get Cheese Whiz.<\/p>\n
In fact, when you finally go to the polls on Nov. 6 and vote for Gary Johnson or Barack Romney or Willard Obama, even THAT vote won\u2019t be binding. They won\u2019t tell you, but what you\u2019re really choosing is a slate of electors who will convene as the Electoral College and choose our president.<\/p>\n
In 1972, Richard Nixon won the popular vote in Virginia. Among the electors expected to ceremonially cast one of Virginia\u2019s electoral votes for Nixon was the late lawyer and television producer Roger MacBride.<\/p>\n
But he didn\u2019t. MacBride decided California Libertarian Party nominee John Hospers would make a better president — at least there was a CHANCE Hospers would obey his oath to \u201cprotect and defend the Constitution\u201d — so MacBride cast his electoral vote for Hospers,<\/p>\n
History remembers MacBride — who for his courageous act was named the LP\u2019s 1976 presidential nominee — a \u201cfaithless elector.\u201d But as David Boaz wrote in an obituary in Liberty Magazine, \u201cfaithless to Nixon and Agnew, anyway, but faithful to the constitutional principles Rose Wilder Lane had instilled in him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Binding, schminding.<\/p>\n
Our chair-gal asked if everyone\u2019s mind was made up, or if they wanted to hear speeches. A loud sentiment was voiced for \u201cno speeches.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since we had to sit around for more than an hour, though, there was some chatter. The two oldest gentlemen in the room allowed as how they couldn\u2019t vote for Ron Paul, because he\u2019d called the prisoners held at Guantanamo \u201calleged\u201d terrorists.<\/p>\n
A young lady across the room — almost certainly the only other Ron Paul voter — volunteered that maybe he used that word because no one had determined their guilt — not even a military tribunal.<\/p>\n
The two older gentlemen allowed as how they didn\u2019t need any of that due-process malarkey. \u201cSometimes you just have to use your head.\u201d<\/p>\n
They\u2019re not entirely wrong. If you\u2019re actually at war, with people shooting at you or trying to blow up your buildings, the correct response is not to apprehend your enemies, assign them public defenders, and allow them to turn your courtrooms into bully pulpits for their hateful lunacy. The correct solution is to kill them and pee on their corpses, which we are then free to wrap up and bury in pigskins, if we feel like it.<\/p>\n
Problem is, Congress (which alone is delegated the power) hasn\u2019t declared war on anyone since 1945, and our vastly expensive, illegal, \u201cnation-building\u201d foreign wars are doing more harm than good.<\/p>\n
I volunteered the opinion that — while you don\u2019t have to be a veteran to be president — I might invest a little more trust on an issue like this in a candidate who\u2019s actually served. Have any of the current five candidates ever served in the armed forces?<\/p>\n
The general opinion in the room seemed to be that none of the four GOP candidates had served.<\/p>\n
\u201cActually,\u201d I said, \u201cRon Paul was a flight surgeon, which means he was a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force. I think I\u2019d trust him not to strip our defenses to the point where we\u2019d be in any danger.\u201d<\/p>\n
It was amiable chatter. No one\u2019s mind was changed. After sitting around for 90 minutes, the little ballot slips finally arrived and Precinct 2711 voted Romney 7, Gingrich 6, Ron Paul 2, Santorum 1.<\/p>\n
Mitt Romney gave us first-in-the-nation socialized medicine with RomneyCare (that is, if you don\u2019t count socialist Medicare and Medicaid, which the Republicans in Washington have never made any serious effort to repeal).<\/p>\n
Romneycare doesn\u2019t work, by the way. Costs there are skyrocketing: See http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/6ou68ke<\/a> and http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/7fpjq35<\/a>.<\/p>\n Mitt Romney banned firearms even for Utah permit-holders at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics so as not to frighten the foreigners, despite the murders committed at the 1972 Munich Olympics precisely because of the Victim Disarmament rules in force there.<\/p>\n And Mitt Romney giddily signed a ban on so-called \u201cassault weapons\u201d in Massachusetts in 2004, declaring \u201cDeadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts. … They are instruments of destruction for the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.\u201d<\/p>\n Like redcoats? I believe General Gage told the Minutemen of Lexington and Concord pretty much the same thing in 1775.<\/p>\n But there is no truth — I repeat, the rumor has been completely discredited — that Gov. Romney concluded that signing ceremony by defiantly unzipping his fly and peeing on the Capitol statue of the Massachusetts Minuteman.<\/p>\n Others have called for Nevada\u2019s caucus system to be replaced by a government-run voting-machine primary. While this would more accurately reflect the way the two branches of the Republicrat party have gone from private associations to mere subsidized adjuncts of the state, I disagree. I think participation is still way too high, as it is.<\/p>\n I believe we\u2019d be more likely to end up with a principled, smaller-government president if Nevada\u2019s Republican designee were chosen by Dean Heller, Sharron Angle, former state Sen. Ann O\u2019Connell, Mina lobster farmer Bob Eddy, a member of Elko\u2019s newspapering Steninger clan, and a randomly selected cattle rancher and brothel madam meeting in a smoke-filled room in Wells, with tie votes to be resolved through the use of pugil sticks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Did everybody have fun at those Saturday morning Nevada Republican caucuses?
