19-year-old Nikolas de Jesus Cruz — who killed 17 former schoolmates at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Feb. 14 — had committed numerous serious crimes over the previous five years, including assault, but had no criminal record (which would have prevented him from buying firearms.)

Thinking about it, I figure I had at least four good reasons for wanting to give U.S. Sen. Al Franken, Minnesota Democrat-Farmer-Labor, the benefit of the doubt.

A federal judge in Las Vegas declared a mistrial April 24 in the case of four men accused of taking up arms against federal agents during the Bundy Ranch standoff in 2014, The Associated Press reports.
