(Brunette here.) 2017 has been quite an amazing year so far. Hard to believe the holidays are upon us already! Many people seem to be dreading those dinner table conversations, now that nearly every subject (except maybe pets) can lead to political disagreements. Sports? (NFL kneelers . . . Check.) Weather? (Climate change, check.) Entertainment? (Harvey Weinstein was only the beginning, check.)

I had meant to re-post this yesterday, Oct. 25 -– as I used to do, every couple of years. (Have six years really sped by?) But of course our friends at GoDaddy chose the evening of Oct. 24, this year, to shut us down for 44 hours as they “migrated this site to a new server.” Anyhow -– as we now seem to be “up” again, and despite the fact there are unfortunately fewer and fewer each year who actually remember the dark days of 1942 — here it is, largely unchanged from the last time I posted it, on or about Oct. 25, 2011 . . .

(Our first installment ended with a lengthy excerpt from Tom Conley, a former civilian police captain, senior-level commissioned officer in the United States Navy Reserve, and certified U.S. Department of Defense counter-terrorism instructor, posted at the “Security” magazine Web site on Oct. 13 ( https://www.securitymagazine.com/blogs/14-security-blog/post/88391-the-las-vegas-massacre-the-anatomy-of-a-catastrophic-security-failure .)

Our friend Ernie Hancock, who runs the Freedom’s Phoenix radio show and Web site down in Phoenix ( http://www.freedomsphoenix.com/Front-Page.htm ) claims I originated the dictum that -– if you want the straight dope on any big, controversial news event -– you just need to “wait three weeks” for the official “massaged for the masses” narrative to start to unravel.

I see where 40 people have now died (with 5,700 homes destroyed) in wildfires along California’s central and north-central coast this month -– wildfires that are far hotter, more intense, more widespread, and harder to extinguish than would have been common 50 years ago.

At one of the local thrift shops this week I picked up the fifth ever weekly issue of Sports Illustrated — Sept. 13, 1954. The magazine has one major article, each, on college football (no NFL — my dad reported the pro league was still considered largely disreputable back then, sort of like professional wrestling); baseball; auto racing; boxing (Rocky Marciano vs. Ezzard Charles), mountain-climbing, hunting, and spearfishing.

(Brunette here.) Are you skeptical about religion? Yes? . . . me too. Are you equally skeptical of Atheism? (Ditto.) Atheism seems quite popular at present; I take no issue with individual atheists, though evangelizing atheists (evangelists of any sort, frankly) DO irk me. Faith is an extremely personal thing to those who possess it. In tossing religion out the window, does it concern you that God might get the boot too? Recently I’ve come to see that as a problem that affects Americans (and Western cultures) in numerous ways. Once you abandon the tenet of a loving creator, you also abandon the presumed basis of equality, for starters.
