Brunette here, with some sad news.
Regular readers of Vin’s might recall Sandy, the large creamsicle (mostly white, with hints of orange) cat in Vin’s author photo.

First, a bit of background …

“The Miskatonic Manuscript” is at the printers, where lengthy incantations and rituals must of course be observed before the presses can actually roll. (It is their busiest time of year.)

Columnist Scott Lemieux, who teaches political science at the College of St. Rose in Albany, wrote on Aug. 26 for the left-leaning, British-based newspaper “The Guardian”:
“After the 24-year-old television reporter Alison Parker and her 27-year-old cameraman Adam Ward were killed while on camera from a lake outside of Roanoke, Virginia . . . the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton, somewhat predictably tweeted ‘We must act to stop gun violence, and we cannot wait any longer’ and Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe called for new gun control measures in the form of background checks.

Cat’s Curiosities also sells vinyl LP records, by the way — nearly 200 offered online, at last count.
Simply go to our online ABE store at www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sortby=0&vci=51238921 and enter the word “LP” or “vinyl” or “record” — results may differ slightly, but any of the three will do — in the “Search Within these Results” line.

The lawsuit accuses the city of violating Washington state law, which prohibits local governments from adopting laws related to firearms unless specifically authorized by the state.

What’s that? The next presidential election is still 14 months away?
Sorry, but Americans are sports fans, and they’ve expressed a growing preference for the multi-level “playoff.” Not enough anymore for a team to be quietly awarded a trophy or “pennant” for simply winning the most games over the course of a long season. No. Now we need Cinderella “wild card” teams, quarterfinals, division championships, all leading up to a “Super Bowl” or “World Series.” Look at the constant hand-wringing over the fact that college football doesn’t lend itself to this structure due to some old-fashioned notion that “student athletes” should get back to taking classes and exams after a brief 12-week season, instead of spending most of the winter playing their way to the top of some “playoff pyramid.”

“There is no greater coward than a criminal who enters a house of God and slaughters innocent people engaged in the study of scripture,” said Cornell William Brooks, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, after a visitor to a Bible study group at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church shot and killed the preacher and eight parishioners there in Charleston, South Carolina June 17.
I agree with Mr. Brooks. I hope we can all agree that when people arm themselves and travel to a church with the pre-arranged plan to open fire and kill people at that church –- peaceful, innocent people who have caused no one harm — that’s evil, and anyone who commits such an act should be charged with multiple felonies and put on trial.
